Ilfracombe
Ilfracombe has been popular with holidaymakers since the 1800s, thanks to its stunning coastline. The town is surrounded by award-winning sandy beaches and unique attractions, making it an ideal location for a beach holiday.
Ilfracombe’s reputation as the culinary and cultural hub of North Devon has been steadily growing for the past few years. Many visitors now refer to it as the new St. Ives, and it’s easy to see why.
Beaches in Ilfracombe
On one side, there is Wildersmouth Beach, accessible via the South West Coast Path, and on the other side, there are smaller, secluded areas like Rapparee Cove and Hele Cove, ideal for rock pooling.
Tunnels Beaches
One of the most famous beaches in the area is the Tunnels Beaches, which also doubles as a wedding venue and a heritage attraction. Hand-carved in the 1820s, these tunnels offer a unique glimpse into the town’s Victorian history. The tunnels transformed this fishing town into a popular seaside resort while maintaining Victorian etiquette by segregating men, women, girls, and boys on their way to the beach. The secluded beach, accessible through these historic tunnels, is a stunning location and a premium wedding destination.
Family-Friendly Attractions
Ilfracombe is full of family-friendly attractions and activities. From the Aquarium in the harbour to Watermouth Castle and theme park, which combines the remains of a Victorian-era castle with a theme park and landscaped gardens, there is something for everyone.
Arts and crafts are also popular in Ilfracombe, with regular events and galleries dotted around the town. The annual Arts Trail is a highlight, drawing huge crowds each year. For other creative entertainment, check out the programme at Ilfracombe’s Landmark Theatre, featuring everything from vintage festivals to internationally acclaimed music, drama, and comedies.
Visit Verity
Ilfracombe is known worldwide for housing Damien Hirst’s famous 20m high sculpture, Verity. The statue, located at the pier overlooking the Bristol Channel towards Wales, depicts a pregnant woman holding a sword and a set of scales while standing on a pile of books. Half the statue reveals the woman’s insides with the foetus visible. Described by Hirst as a modern allegory of truth and justice, Verity is a must-see, whether you love her or hate her.
A Haven for Foodies
If you’re a foodie, head to Fore Street, Ilfracombe’s gastronomic hub. Many of the town’s restaurants and eateries are located here, offering high-quality menus featuring seasonal, local produce around the harbour.
Ilfracombe’s incredible views make it the perfect place for fine dining, especially if you time your meal to catch a sunset. The historic harbour and popular fishing spots provide an abundance of wonderful seafood menus. For those who aren’t fans of seafood, there are plenty of other culinary delights to choose from in this charming seaside town.
